I had been struggling for years with being tired, low energy, and not sleeping well during the night. I had to take naps every day. I felt like I was missing out on life, my wife, and my children due to not having enough energy. About 10 years ago, my primary physician referred me for a sleep study. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and prescribed a CPAP. After a couple of years on the CPAP, the problems had not improved. I was still tired, had low energy, and still not sleeping well during the night. I had now developed anxiety.

My primary physician referred me to another surgeon and that surgeon recommended an operation to correct my deviated septum. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t correct my problem. I still could not breathe freely through my nose. I struggled for another 5 years with this problem. Out of desperation, I discussed my problem with my primary physician again and he referred me to Dr. Ludwick. Due to the lack of success with my last surgeon, I was ambivalent about visiting with Dr. Ludwick. Nevertheless, the lack of quality life with myself, my wife, and my children motivated me to make an appointment.

I was totally impressed during with my first visit because he asked me questions about my condition that I should have known the answers because I had a previous surgery, but I didn’t know the answers. I was not as informed about my condition and my last surgery as I should have been. When Dr. Ludwick discovered that, he PATIENTLY educated me verbally and visually. He explained concepts where I could understand them. He even showed me on the computer where I could actually see the problem. I finally felt empowered. Then, Dr. Ludwick shared my options and gave me totally responsibility for the decision. I chose to have the surgery to correct my deviated septum and it was SUCCESSFUL. I am breathing freely. I have energy. I spend time with my wife and children on weekends instead of sleeping my life away. I truly thankful to Dr. Ludwick and strongly recommend him.

I became a patient of Dr. Ludwick a while ago, when I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I was first tested in the hospital facility. It was scary, with all the wires hooked to me, but the staff there was very nice, and I actually was able to sleep. I really didn’t know much about sleep apnea at that time.

I had my first visit in the office after the test results were in. The office is a very welcoming atmosphere, not like most medical offices a very cold, warm feeling. The staff immediately put me at ease. They were all very friendly and efficient. Dr. Ludwick explained what sleep apnea was and how it affected me. He answered all my questions in a way I understood. He took all the time with me I needed, and I never felt rushed.

I was then introduced to Marisol, who takes care of my CPAP machine, and answers any of my questions. I am still amazed at how much better I feel since I started using it. I needed a new sleep study a few months ago, and to my pleasant surprise the clinic for sleep study had been added to the office. It is fixed up as comfortable as your own home, (only you don’t have to make the bed). Every thing for your comfort is provided for. The technicians for the study are very nice, and again, explain everything to you and answer your questions.

I have allergy induced asthma for almost 20 years, and the Dr recommended allergy testing, which I had done in the office. I had a choice between the shots and drops, and I am just finishing up with my initial four month treatment, and will be starting on maintenance next week. I am already able to away with my allergy medicine most of the time now. I was dependent on it every day before I started. Claudia is the very nice person who administered my allergy testing, and keeps track of my drops for me.

I would like to thank all of you in the office for making me feel so comfortable there and welcome. It is like I am visiting friends, not “going to a Dr’s office. ” Thanks guys!

I was very hard to deal with and not a pleasure to be around. I found myself phoning the Dr’s office quite a few times in between my scheduled visits with questions and sometimes complaints. Dr. Ludwick and his staff (Marisol and Samantha) were always helpful and warm. They put me right at ease during my recovery. Just knowing they were a phone call away meant a lot to me. The overall outcome was a huge success. I no longer snore and there’s no need for a CPAP.

I wanted to take a couple of minutes and express my appreciation for the different experience I’ve had since choosing your practice for help with my health needs. For about the last 5 years I had been going to another sleep study center in west Houston after a referral from my primary physician for investigating sleep apnea. They scheduled a sleep study and I came in for test. The whole process of attaching the leads was pretty overwhelming and it seemed like I couldn’t get comfortable and didn’t really get much sleep that night. They adjusted things through the night and according to them, I actually did get a few hours of sleep. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and slated to begin using a CPAP machine.

From the beginning, I had issues with mask they had me start using. The first mask I had was some sort of nasal pillow and it hurt the inside of my nose so bad during the day it was raw and painful. I was given some samples of RoEzit and even though it helped, I was still experiencing a lot of pain. I had to buy my own supply of the ointment and was still having problems. I eventually insisted that they do something about the problem and to make a long story short, I tried just about every mask out there and still had problems.

Part of the issue was that they had the titration level set so high the I really had to cinch the mask on to get a seal. It was so bad that wearing the masks every night ultimately ended up actually moving my teeth. My dentist referred me back to an orthodontist and keep in mind, I had my teeth straightened as a kid with braces and hadn’t had any problems for years. I continued to complain and nothing really was done. I also want to mention that I only met the primary doctor of that sleep center a couple of times in those 5 years, as he was always busy, and I was given his associate and sometimes even a nurse type assistant instead of him.

I realized they were more interested in dumping the data from my CPAP machine for their published study than dealing with any of the long term issues I was having. My office visits went from quarterly the first year to about once a year and I started thinking about how this was going to work out for me, longer term. Just the issue of getting these masks and CPAP supplies was a difficulty in itself. They had a supplier there within the same strip center their office was in, but unfortunately, they didn’t accept my insurance (which is one of the major carriers?- never did understand that). On several occasions, I had to drive to the other side of Houston to pick supplies on my own and at one point I had to have my malfunctioning CPAP machine replaced on my own, which was basically haggling with the supplier, even though all this was covered under my insurance. The supplier now uses an automated phone system that calls my house periodically, with a pre-recorded message and a 1-800 number. Did I mention that this “sleep centers” office is right next door to a kids video game arcade and you can actually hear this through the wall? Made for some interesting office visits.

Another problem I was having was that my sinuses were often so congested that it made it extremely difficult to put on a CPAP mask and breath through my nose all night. The result was that I would end up breathing through my mouth (which completely defeats the purpose of the CPAP machine) and I’d wake up with my mouth and sinuses completely dehyrdated and feeling lousy because I didn’t sleep well. I had a chinstrap that helped with the issue, but I lost it somewhere on a business trip. Their solution was to prescribe me a nasal spray (which didn’t help) and give me a referral to an allergist, again on the other side of town. The told me they didn’t recommend the chinstrap as it didn’t work well – I disagreed as it had helped some. It never got replaced. I also complained about chronic pressure behind my right eye that I suspected was related to all this and no recommendation was made.

Anyway, fast forward a few years. I got rid of my old primary care physician (for other reasons) and we went through the usual first time annual physical stuff with my new doctor. I explained about my sleep apnea issues and he immediately recommended ” a great ENT guy – Dr. Ludwick”. I learned more information about sleep apnea and nose and throat anatomy issues in one visit, than I had learned in years of going through it elsewhere. Being able to see full color live video of your scope inside my nasal cavities and throat showed me exactly what we were dealing with and you clearly laid out the game plan and possible options. I think you actually spent more time with me one on that first day than all my other visits with the other guy combined.

We scheduled an overnight stay in your sleep center to recalibrate my titration level and it was a completely different experience. The flatscreen high-def TV was a hit right off the bat as I didn’t even miss one of my favorite shows that evening. And the staff was awesome. The technician did a great job of explaining the system and the electrodes that needed to be hooked up for the night and then we basically just carried on a casual conversation about other stuff and the time passed quickly. When I first got there I was worried I was going to be bored out of my head because it seemed like an early start time and I’m sort of a late night owl. The time went quickly and I think I feel to sleep pretty quickly. I really only remember being gently awakened a couple of times when I pulled a lead lose, but then I sort of expected that as I toss and turn a lot. I should also mention that the private bathroom was really nice – I think it was a common bath/shower area with my previous doctor. I had asked if it was possible to wrap things up early in the morning and he obliged. I was able to make it back home and didn’t miss any part of work that next day.

The follow-up office visit was also great. We went through the results on your PC, in your personal office space, and everything was explained in detail. I was fitted with a new type of full-faced mask, which completely eliminated all the issues I had before. I was also given a new BiPAP machine (right there in your office) which also allowed you to reduce the titration (pressure) level. This alone has made me much more comfortable.

And finally, you also addressed my chronic allergy issues and sinus pressure. I’ve always had what I called seasonal allergies, but never did anything about it. I had been to other ENT’s in the past who did the usual antibiotic thing and then never followed up on the “chronic” issue. I literally lived on Sudafed almost every day and always felt congested, sometimes resorting to nasal sprays which caused even more problems. I was tested for allergies in your office and pretty much found I’m allergic to almost everything. I began the under-tongue drop regimen (which is really easy) and I haven’t taken a Sudafed (or any allergy medicine) since then and I feel great. That nagging sinus pressure is gone and I breathe much better now through my nose. I plan to stay on the allergy drops until we complete the full course.

I know this is long winded, but I thought it was important to share. I’m a really busy guy with a demanding high stress job and anything like this that can improve my health and make it easier to get through my daily life is worth sharing with others. One more note; I had one of those “annual” visits with my old doctor roll around here recently. I didn’t show up for the appointment and they sent me a $50 “No Show” fee. I guess they didn’t put two and two together about me having my medical records transferred. I straightened it out with a single phone call recanting some of the experience I shared above and they decided to eliminate the fee.

Thanks Dr. Ludwick!
Sincerely,
Jeff Matherson

Over the past year Dr. Ludwick has helped me with the following procedures: 1.2.3.4.

I first went to Dr.Ludwick after telling my primary care physician that I was experiencing a sluggishness in the mornings. After my first examination with Dr. Ludwick I signed up for a sleep apnea test. This proved to be a rather pleasant experience and not as intrusive as I had thought. The accommodations were more than adequate and the comfort level could be equated to staying in an upscale hotel. Once the initial recordings were made at my first stay, Dr. Ludwick went over the findings with me and explained to me, in terms I could relate to, just how my body functions in terms of breathing. My second stay in the sleep clinic I was fitted with a C-Pak (sp). This is a machine that provided a positive pressure to my airway and enables me to have a restful sleep. This has made an enormous difference to the way I feel in the morning.

During my examinations Dr. Ludwick also pointed out to me some things that I had more or less just had learned to live with. One was a rhinophyma and the other was a deviated septum.

The rhinophyma was in my way of thinking a result of rosecea and over the years it had disfigured the skin on the surface of my nose, giving it a bumpy and often infected appearance. I had gone to several dermatologists and had resigned myself to be taking tetracycline for the rest of my life to keep it under control.

The deviated septum was a development that started in my early childhood and probably worsen thru the years during competitive sports activities. Dr. Ludwick pointed out that he could help me with both. At the age of fifty eight, I decided that it would be worth the effort to have repairs done on my nose as I approached my retirement years.

The first procedure involved the planning of the skin on my nose to remove the phyma. This was done through a day surgery with weekly follow ups until the skin rebuilt itself.

This was a very successful procedure for me. To my surprise I started getting complements on a physical feature I had accepted as being part of an ugly aging process.

Next came the rebuilding of my nasal structure. Dr. Ludwick had pointed out that my nose structure was bad. Something I had recognized as practically nonexistent for years. Dr. Ludwick again performed a day surgery and has told me since that the structure was completely destroyed and how challenging this restructuring was for him. I agree that this was a major undertaking, but I am glad it was done. My nose has a structure that I do not remember in my life time as having. I had always thought that people’s noses were pliable to the point they could readily be pushed flat to their faces.

The final procedure that Dr. Ludwick performed on me was Coblation Turbinate Reduction. Although I had my nose structure rebuilt, I still had problems with breathing due to alergins and suffered through stuffy noses which would lead to colds. This procedure reduced the size of my nasal tissue, allowing me a better opportunity to breath freely with less irritation.

All throughout these procedures and office visits, I have been impressed with Dr. Ludwick’s ability to explain medical terminology in detail in lay mans terms, his confidence and honesty in expressing his diagnosis. I find this refreshing in today’s market. It has been my experience that the medical field offers very few opportunities for a client to actually connect with a doctor. Dr. Ludwick, although could be classified as a no nonsense doctor, certainly shows some latitude when comparing a medical procedure to repairing a car. His confidence has built my trust in him and his honest appraisals are often right on the mark.

Dr. Ludwick’s professionalism is also very apparent and this has extended to his staff, who are courteous and flexible in helping to meet technical needs as well as answering questions.

Overall I rank Dr. Ludwick, his staff and his facilities very high when I compare them to other medical service providers I have encountered. Rarely have I received medical attention that has impacted my life in such away as I have received in the past year under Dr. Ludwick’s care.

I have had issues with my sinuses for as far back as I can remember. Most of my life was spent with me breathing through my mouth due to my inability to breathe through my nose. I finally came to the realization that this was not normal and decided to see a specialist. My first visit to Dr. Ludwick was in January 2009. Because I also have asthma and allergies I also visited the clinic next door to Dr. Ludwick. I thought my sinus issues were caused by my allergies and thought I could kill two birds with one stone by just getting treated by my asthma/allergy doctor. I was wrong.

After months of continued sinus infections and a visit to my primary care physician, I was referred back to Dr. Ludwick. At that time I had an added symptom of not being able to sleep through the night. Dr. Ludwig had me undergo a sleep study and ordered a CT scan on my sinuses. It was determined that I did have mild sleep apnea and that I would benefit from sinus surgery. I had my sinus surgery in June 2010.

Since undergoing the sinus surgery, my breathing has significantly improved. I no longer have to sit with my mouth open in order to breathe. I had not realized until after the surgery that my sinus issues had impacted my hearing. My improved hearing was an added bonus I had not anticipated. Recovery after the surgery was relatively painless. I was up and functioning as normal after one week.

The staff at Dr. Ludwick’s office is always professional and personable. I always feel cared for and am confident that my needs will always be taken care of. I never once felt anxiety about the surgery because I knew I was in good hands with Dr. Ludwick and his staff. I would refer my family and friends to Dr. Ludwick without any hesitation.

I have had sleep apnea for about 3 years before seeing Dr. Ludwick. I would fall asleep in meetings, had no motivation at work, and always felt fatigued. I use to drink 12 cups of coffee a day just to function at work. Now I drink a max of 3 cups a day and I feel like a new person. In the past I have had my pallet trimmed incorrectly by another physician and it made my sleep apnea worse.

Dr. Ludwick corrected the procedure as well as performing a base of tongue and hyoid suspension. Since then I am able to sleep on my side with no obstruction. I do use a bipap because I often cannot stay on my side and end up sleeping on my back where I still get some slight obstruction due to being born with a small airway. Before my surgeries and the use of my bipap I would have over 100 episodes if interrupted sleep where I would wake subconsciously to breathe.

After my surgeries my last sleep study showed that I only had 8 episodes and I now reach REM. I feel like a new person. I wake up now and hit the ground running where before I was like a big slug dreading the sound of the alarm clock. The sleep study facility is very relaxing and the technicians are very friendly and accommodating. Dr. Ludwick explained my sleep study results to me in a way that made it easy to understand. He is very good at putting things in layman’s terms. He actually showed me the video of my sleep study session and explained to me what I was going through and why. I never knew that I kicked my legs and was so restless at night.

My wife is very happy now since my restlessness used to wake her often. Dr. Ludwick’s bedside manner after each of my surgeries was fantastic. He is a very caring physician and he has changed my life. His entire staff is great. From scheduling appointments, checking insurance benefits, and billing the entire staff is excellent and very friendly.

In addition to helping my sleep apnea Dr. Ludwick has helped me tremendously with my Houston allergies. I move here from Georgia in 2004 and Dr. Ludwick is the first doctor to give me relief from my allergies and for the first time in my life I look forward to Spring and Fall.

If you are experiencing sleep apnea I suggest that you schedule a consult with Dr. Ludwick. He identified my issues and developed a plan to resolve them and I am a better person today. I sleep, I dream, and I function through the day better than I have in the past 5 years.

Prior to my surgery I can't honestly remember the last time I was able to breathe through my nostrils! Thanks to Dr. Ludwick I can now!!

Dr. Ludwick’s office is located right off the Westpark Tollway and is very convenient to get too, His staff is extremely professional and polite. I received a Septoplasty as well as a Bilateral Sphenoidomy. The procedure was done at Altus Surgical Center off the beltway. It took from start to finish approx. 3 hrs, there was very little pain and discomfort. I was back to work in a day later. A week after my surgery I had a follow up consultation, everything looked great and I have felt great ever since.

Frankly I find it amazing I can actually breathe out of my nose now and this allergy season I don’t think I hardly sneezed.

Thanks Dr. Jim for all your help! I would recommend him to anyone with sinus or allergy issues!

Dr. Ludwick is great. He explains things very simply and thoroughly. They were even able to get me in for testing right away when it was clear that I needed a bipap. I felt like I was being taken care of throughout the entire experience.

The bipap has totally changed my life. The quality of my sleep has improved to the point where I wondered how I was able to function at all before I started using it. Before, I would constantly feel tired throughout the day, I would fall asleep watching tv, I would doze off at traffic lights, in fact, I fell asleep in the waiting room. All of that went away after I started using the bipap.

Post op care included rinsing out the sinuses with a saline rinse 3X per day.

If you have similar problems, definitely see Dr Ludwick. You will be in great hands.
